Air India VS IndiGo Airlines Comparison

Air India was established on 15 October 1932. By that time this airline was known as ‘TATA Airlines’, as J.R.D. TATA was the owner of this airline at that time. But In 1949, after the end of World War-2,  this company was bought by the Government of India.

On the other hand, Indigo Airlines was started on 8th August 2007 by the director of  Interglobe Enterprise Rakesh Gangwal and Rahul Bhatia. Indigo Airlines is the only airline in India that has been consistently earning profits since 2009. And in the last 13 years, Indigo Airlines has grown so much that it has become Asia’s largest ‘Low-Cost Carrier’ airline.

Headquarters of Air India is located in New Delhi while the headquarters of Indigo Airlines is located in Gurugram city of Haryana.

Air India works on the ‘Full-service Model’. This means that the airline focuses on the overall Passenger’s experience. On the other hand, Indigo Airlines operates on the ‘Low-Cost Model’ and this model of Indigo Airlines has been very successful for the last few years.

First Flight

Friends, if we talk about the first flight of Air India, then on 15th October 1932,  Air India aircraft made its first flight from Karachi to Bombay (Mumbai) and at that time the aircraft was being operated by JRD TATA itself while Indigo Airlines took its maiden flight from New Delhi to Imphal on 8th August 2007 and IndiGo’s first international airline started from Dubai to Delhi on 1 September 2011.


Fleet Size

Talking about fleet size, Air India has 125 Airplanes of Airbus (76) and Boeing (49) company. On the other hand, IndiGo has 234 airplanes in total with Airbus (220) and ATR (14). Also according to economic times, Indigo Airlines has ordered 730 aircraft of the A320 Neo model, and in the coming few years, Indigo is going to become the world’s largest airline service provider.

Number of destinations

Talking about the number of destinations, Air India flights traveled 94 destinations in total, out of which 54 are Domestic and 40 International destinations. While IndiGo Airlines traveled a total of 66 destinations, including 51 domestic and 15 international destinations.

Number of passengers

In terms of a number of passengers, Air India is the second-largest airline service provider in India after IndiGo. And if we talk about the market share of India, then Air India has 13.3% Domestic and 18.6% international market share. While IndiGo is India’s largest airline service provider. IndiGo has 41.3% Domestic and 4% international market share.

Service Quality / Service Quality

In terms of service quality, then according to 2018 Airline reviews and ranking website – Skytrax, Indigo Airlines was at number fifty-five while Air India has not found a place in this list of top 100 airlines in the world.

As I told you in the beginning that Air India works on the full-service model, that’ why you can get a lot of comfy seats, Flight Entertainment, Bussiness class, more legs space, and free food during the flight than the Indigo Airlines. But for all these services, you have to pay an extra 20-40% ticket cost as compare to Indigo Airlines. On the other hand, indigo airlines working on a low-cost model that’s why they do not have any Bussiness class and the first-class department in their aircraft and indigo does not provide any type of free food facility during their flight to minimize their ticket cost.


Net Income

Talking about net income, last year in 2014, Air India’s grossed net income was U US$830 million and the same Indigo Airlines earned the US $320 million in the last year.

Although, from the figures, IndiGo Airlines is far behind Air India, yet in overall profits, Air India is in the loss.  And the Indian government is planning to sell this company to a private company.

Number of employees

Talking about the number of employees, there are 24,000 people working in Air India Airline. while 18,000 people are working for Indigo Airlines.

Accidents

Talking about the accidents, there have been small incidents with Indigo Airlines. But there has been no fatal accident of Indigo Airlines happened so far. while some major causality had been happened on air India flights and so far more than 800 people have lost their lives in these accidents, although Indigo Airlines has been started just 13 years back while Air India has been serving people for the last 80 years.
